LEVEL 1 SEWING –INTRODUCTION TO SEWING BASICS FOR ADULTS Jo-Ann Reimer No experience required. The perfect project for this class is a drawstring/pyjama style pant. This project has proven to be a great starter project to learn the basics and achieve success in project completion. Otherwise you may choose any garment requiring 4 pattern pieces or less. Learn basic sewing skills and machine operation; correct cutting, marking, pressing, and seam finishing; as well as simple pattern adjustments and fitting techniques. Learn to understand commercial pattern envelope information, ease, grain of fabric, nap, notches, etc. Determine your correct pattern size; it's not the same as ready-to-wear sizing. Jo-Ann will show you how much fun sewing can be using the newest sewing aids and equipment in our bright new classroom that is fully equipped with machines, irons, and ironing boards. Come to the first class in clothing suitable for taking measurements and bring a pencil and paper.
SERGER SAVVY Pat Dykes This all day workshop combining demonstration, lecture and hands-on will help you to understand your serger. You'll learn all about tensions and adjustments so you can serge perfect seams, flatlock and rolled hems. Know when to use one or two needles. Try those specialty threads. You will make a sample book to take home.
EMBROIDERY GIFT OF THE MONTH Pat Dykes, Martha Pullen Teacher Based on Martha Pullen Gift of the Month. Every month we will meet to work on the latest project. Each project is a surprise and incorporates both an embroidery design and a technique. Students will need to pick up the embroidery CD one week before the class to transfer the embroidery design to their machine/card.
BLOCKS OF THE MONTH Come every month or just once to discover new techniques. Each can be used individually as the centre of a pillow or placemat or you may choose to make a whole quilt from a single block or make different blocks to give a sampler quilt. New in 2008 is the Appliqué Block of the month. *The evening Block of the Month class will be a choice of Pieced or Appliqué.
PIECED BLOCK-OF-THE-MONTH Pat Dykes Learn and make traditional pieced quilt blocks. Finished size 12" square. This is a month by month class - the same block will be made in each class offered in the same month.
APPLIQUẾ BLOCK-OF-THE-MONTH Pat Dykes Learn and make appliquéd quilt blocks. The theme will be Victoria/Vancouver Island. Finished size 12" square. To complete this quilt there will be a centre appliqué motif and borders constructed in late 2008 or early 2009. This is a month by month class - the same block will be made in each class offered in the same month.
HEIRLOOM BLOCK-OF-THE-MONTH Pat Dykes, Martha Pullen Licensed Teacher Blocks with an heirloom focus. Each block will focus on heirloom techniques including lace-to-lace, entredeux, lace and bias shaping, shark's teeth, pintucks and decorative stitching. Finished size 10" square.
EMBROIDERED QUILT BLOCK-OF-THE-MONTH Pat Dykes Learn and make blocks embellished with embroidery. Students will need to transfer the embroidery for use to their machine. This class will be different than last year's as each centre will be a combination of embroideries and will have a different pieced border around it. Finished size 15" square.

SKIRTS Fern MacDonald Skirts are fun to make and wear. They help us feel fresh and cool in the summer. There are so many styles to choose from including gored, A-line, and variations on the pencil skirt. The gored skirt is flattering to us all and can be made from so many different fabrics from linen to knits. The A-line never goes out of fashion and is especially flattering to those who carry their weight at the hipline. Make it in a pretty print or in a basic solid color to be the staple of your wardrobe. The pencil skirt is all about the length and the choice of waist finish. For the slim the waistband can be high and accented with a wide belt. For those with great legs choose a faced waistband and use some great trim at the hemline. All these skirts can be lined or keep it simple for summer and make it unlined and focus on your fit.

PATTERN FIT Fern MacDonald In this class you will fit an upper torso pattern of your choice. You will learn what size is best for you. How to alter your pattern and do the adjustments that you need to achieve a good fit. How to read the pattern envelope to get all the information that applies to your size. Back, shoulder, bust adjustments will all be demonstrated. You will finish the class with a pattern that fits you. This is a fun and informative class.
COMFORT PANT – YOGA PANT Fern MacDonald The most comfortable pant to wear and relatively easy to make. You will learn the ins and outs of making your first pair in class. A great way to get to know your serger better if you have one. This pant can be made as a pull on pant with or without band. Fabric weight with the right amount of stretch is crucial.. Come and learn how to fit a basic flat front pant with no pockets and an invisible zipper in the back. This is a universally flattering pant style for most women. The focus will be on the fit. Once you have your basic pant you can change the style easily.
