Whether you are a beginner or a sewer that has been at it for awhile, this course is designed to teach or improve sewing skills. Seams, seam finishing, pressing, interfacing and closures all will be practiced. You will make a binder of samples for future reference, as well as complete 2 small projects.

No experience required. The perfect project for this class is a drawstring/pyjama style pant. This project has proven to be a great starter project to learn the basics and achieve success in project completion. Otherwise you may choose any garment requiring 4 pattern pieces or less. Learn basic sewing skills and machine operation, correct cutting, marking, pressing, and seam finishing, as well as simple pattern adjustments and fitting techniques. Learn to understand commercial pattern envelope information, ease, grain of fabric, nap, notches, etc. Determine your correct pattern size. It's not the same as ready-to-wear sizing. Jo-Ann /Fern will show you how much fun sewing can be using the newest sewing aids and equipment. Our bright classroom is fully equipped with machines, irons, and ironing boards. Come to the first class in clothing suitable for taking measurements and bring pen and paper.

This class is designed for those students who have taken Level 1 Sewing or have completed a garment from a commercial pattern recently and have a clear understanding of all topics covered in Level 1 (see class description). Students are encouraged to choose a project that will slightly challenge their previous sewing skills; for example darts, zipper, facings, collar, cuffs, buttons and buttonholes, set-in sleeve etc. For first class bring pre-washed fabric, pattern, all basic sewing supplies, shears, pins, measuring tape, fabric marker and thread. Since you already know your correct pattern size, these measurements will be needed for minor pattern adjustments.

Do you have unfinished projects that you would love to finish but need just a little help or guidance? Wish you had a fun place to go for an afternoon of sewing? "Sew with Fern Days" are just that! Bring a project(s) that you are working on or a fitting project that you could use help with. Fern will offer advice and help as required. It is not a structured class as each person will be working on a different project. Techniques demonstrated for each individual will be shared with fellow classmates if they choose to watch . Limited space is available so you get lots of attention. This is a fun day with like-minded sewers. Get ready to get organized and finish some of those unfinished projects….

Based on Martha Pullen Gift of the Month. Every month we will meet to work on the latest project. Each project is a surprise and incorporates both an embroidery design and a technique. Students will need to pick up the embroidery CD one week before the class to transfer the embroidery design to their machine/card. A very popular class so book early for each class date. Not sure what to do with your needle felting machine? The goal of this class is to introduce you to some of the creative possibilities of your machine, using a variety of materials. Following a demonstration of various techniques, students will play with their own needle felting machines, making a sampler using various fabrics, fibres, and yarns. The teacher will provide a wide range of sample pieces showing ideas and techniques as well as a supply of materials to be used for experimenting in class. Gather any yarns and roving, scraps of fabrics that you would like to try needle felting with and come for a fun class. Kit fee to teacher.

In this class Joy will teach you how to use prepared felt appliqués to create your own unique surface design. Bring an unlined wool jacket or vest to the class and embellish it for a unique, fresh look. This technique is also a very good way to hide flaws (small holes for instance) in an existing garment. Do you have lots of quilt scraps like I have? Once again Eileen will inspire you to use those scraps from your stash. Once a month we will get together with like minded quilters and "Scrap Along" to make a different small project each month. Swap and/or share your scraps. Come to one or all of the sessions This years projects will include a Sewing Machine Cover and Christmas Stocking. Check out some great samples of previous months projects on display.

This class is designed to overcome your fear of curves. Learn to make templates and how to get those curves machine pieced with ease. An elegant table runner easily shortened or lengthened in 7 inch increments to fit your table size. Another great opportunity to change your table décor with different colour choices.

Learn the basics of machine appliqué using fusible web, stabilizers, satin stitch, and blanket stitch. Learn about different thread choices and which needles work best. Kit fee to teacher $10.00

Eileen patiently teaches you all the basics for quilting. Learn rotary cutting, strip piecing, ¼ " seams for accurate piecing, layering, basics of machine quilting and binding. This is the perfect quilt for a beginner and gives you the foundation for other projects. You'll be delighted with your nine-patch quilt. Size is suitable for a baby or lap quilt. Approx finished size is (40X50).

Eileen is repeating this class by popular demand. It's fun and easy. A great use for all those fat quarters we collect. Make a set of 4 or 6. Give them a decorative finish with simple decorative stitches and variegated threads.

Pet screen is a strong heavy weight screen made of vinyl coated polyester. You'll want to make more than one for gifts as well yourself.

Take Stained Glass to the next level with this Angel project. Denise will teach you just how while you learn to crinkle and manipulate the fabric. Add beading and an embroidery to add all the finishing touches to a lovely wallhanging you will be proud to hang. See Denise's sample for more details.

Denise has designed a Christmas Tree quilt (or wall hanging) using stars, 4 patch, pinwheels, and machine appliqué – all in tone on tone fabrics and quilted with metallic thread. It's a show stopper! Or, if you prefer, use traditional reds and greens of Christmas fabrics. Make a smaller size tree or a table topper and learn all the techniques for a project size to suit your needs and space.

Make three Log Cabin blocks and add a poinsettia machine satin stitched appliqué to the center of each block and you have a lovely Christmas Table Runner. Denise will also give you a layout for a tablecloth/wallhanging as well.

This "quilt as you go" technique is easy and fun. No prerequisites required. A beginner will be proud to take this home. Take the class and make more after class as the perfect gift for family members.

This is a much simpler version of the ever popular "STACK AND WHACK." Instead of making a large quilt try making a tablerunner. Warning, it is very addictive.

Are you intimidated by patterns with zipper closures? Been awhile since you put in a zipper? Learn the ins and outs of inserting zippers in this hands on class. Three zippers will be done in class. Short zippers will be used for easy handling. A zipper will be inserted in a mock jacket front . A boxed pocket opening will be constructed and a zipper closure inserted. An invisible zipper will be inserted to simulate high end ready to wear pants and skirts. After this class zipper insertion will be a breeze.

These placements are a classic look for your kitchen or dining room. Make one in class to learn the technique, then make as many as you like at home for your self or for gifts. How about an early start on Christmas!

The most comfortable pant to wear and relatively easy to make. You will learn the ins and outs of making your first pair in class. A great way to get to know your serger better if you have one. This pant can be made as a pull on pant with or without band. Fabric weight with the right amount of stretch is crucial. Make them for casual wear or yoga classes. Multi sized patterns by hip measurement. Kwik Sew #3115 or #3277 (Plus size)

A simple, well fitting top is a staple in your closet. Choose a sleeveless tank style or a top with your choice of sleeve. Use a bias strip to replace facings for a streamlined finish. Bias finishes can prevent gaping as well as being interesting by choosing a stripe binding on a plain top or using your machine stitches to make your bias special.

The two fitting pattern choices are classic waistband with a hint of elastic (if desired) or a contour faced waistband. Both of these patterns may be lined. Number of students is limited so each student receives lots of attention. Making your own well fitted pants is a pleasure. Get the fit you want in the fabric of your choice.

Make your own Lingerie. Lingerie is easy to make and lovely to wear. Treat yourself to a lovely camisole or panty or both. Learn techniques of lace application, decorative finishes, and comfortable elastic application. Time tested fabrics like silk and cotton plus new technical wick away fabrics which are soft and keep the body dry. Lots of colours are available to add to the basics. Get the fit you need in the styles you desire.

Simple serging is a series of 3 classes to introduce or update your skills with your serger. You can register for one, two or all three. (Simple Serging 3 to be offered in New Year 2011)

Simple Serging 2 The serger can do a lot more than finishing. Learn how to gather, flatlock, and use decorative threads. Decorative techniques and elastic application will be covered.

Blouses are back and a good fit is possible. Once you have the fit, change it up by adding embellishment. It is your choice of stitching, lace in tone on tone or contrast. Learn to change your basic blouse by adding a yoke or insets. Your blouse your way.
